Proprioception

Mastering Canine Proprioception for a Confident Life.

Does your dog lack body awareness? We specialize in improving stability, confidence, and behavior through advanced neurological training and physical support.

The Importance of Proprioception

Proprioception is the ability of an organism to know the exact position of the different parts of the body in every moment. Without it, a dog’s world becomes unpredictable and frightening.

Have you ever approached or touched your dog from behind? Did they jump away from you? Did that make them feel nervous or uncomfortable?

Is your dog experiencing any of the following?

  • Insecure General fear of environments or handling.
  • Destructive Self-injurious behaviors or furniture tossing.
  • Reactive Boredom or high reactivity to strangers/dogs.

  • Reactive Boredom or high reactivity to strangers/dogs.
When your dog has a good understanding of where its body is and is confident in its functions and movement, they will portray confidence when entering a playgroup or other new situation. They will ADD to the growth, bonding, and enjoyment of all of their dog/pack friends.

The Case of the 200lb Panic: A Saint Bernard's Story

I was a mobile groomer who worked alone and I had a client with a Saint Bernard who wanted the dog’s nails done. The dog was vicious at the vets and required 4 people to restrain. I took my time and slowly coaxed the dog to place each foot on the table. This needed calm communication and encouragement until he could figure out how to get up there. Once on the table, the dog then happily let me do my job.

The client's living room was being tossed upside down daily. She suspected the dog had lost its ball under the couch. I suspected the dog could push his way behind there, but couldn’t figure out how to back out again. He would panic and toss the furniture.

I recommended a tensor wrap—the stretchy wraps used for sore wrists. I instructed her to loosely loop it around his chest, front legs, belly, and back legs.

This exercise allows a dog to feel where its bum is. As he moved his front legs, he could feel the gentle pull all the way to his back legs. One session resulted in him figuring out how to walk backwards—never tossing furniture again.

Proprioception: Not Just About Movement

Physical Maturity

When a dog is aware of its body, it is more capable of performing coordinated and balanced movements. It strengthens the musculoskeletal system and develops precision in tasks like tracking and agility.

Emotional Stability

A dog that isn't aware of its body will be insecure and lack self-confidence. This lack of confidence is often portrayed and misread as aggression when entering groups of people or pets.

Behavioral Security

A dog's personality is affected by its degree of security. Poor proprioception leads to fearful behavior which, if not corrected early, can quickly develop into long-term aggression and anxiety.

Ideal Development of Proprioception

  • Puppies (4.5-6 Months): The ideal proprioception stage. Puppies learn the limits of their body through natural play with littermates. Crucial for becoming a balanced adult.
  • All Dogs: Strengthens the musculoskeletal system, allowing for confident movement in any environment.
  • Sports & Working Dogs: Essential for tracking and agility. Prevents injuries and lengthens functionality by increasing muscle system awareness.
  • Senior Dogs: Slows musculoskeletal deterioration and delays mental atrophy. Retains physical mobility despite limitations.

Expert Canine Evaluation

Our dog’s motor and cognitive skills depend largely on their proprioception. Here is how we evaluate your pet’s unique needs.

Detailed Observation

Detecting unsteadiness in natural movement or difficulty with obstacles.

Walking Tests

Testing adaptability on sandy, gravel, aquatic, and slippery grounds.

Flexibility

Analyzing body perception during specific stimuli like turning or paw raising.

Strength Tests

Assessing muscle tone essential for effortless balance and coordinated strength.
