RootX Root Killer for Septic Tanks and Drainfields

RootX can be used in septic tanks, in the line from the tank to the distribution box, and in drainfield lines. It kills the roots it reaches and leaves a coating that helps stop them growing back for up to 12 months. One treatment a year keeps most systems clear.

Why roots end up in your septic system

Tree roots grow toward water and nutrients, and a septic system has plenty of both. Roots find their way in through tank seams, pipe joints and the openings in drainfield pipe. Left alone, they trap solids, slow the flow and can block lines completely. Repairing or replacing a septic line or drainfield can cost thousands of dollars.

How much RootX do you need?

Each jar is one complete treatment. Do not split a jar. Amounts are approximate.

Before you start

  • Clear any blockage first. If roots are causing a full or partial blockage, have them professionally removed before you treat. {Roots must be removed by a professional for the RootX warranty to apply.}
  • Get the timing right. Apply RootX within one hour of cutting roots, or wait 6 to 8 weeks. After cutting, roots regrow quickly and actively take up water, which is the best moment to treat.
  • Mix the jar well. Each jar holds two components. Attach the funnel, keep the lid on, and gently rock the jar back and forth for about two minutes.
  • Wear the gloves and mask that come with every order.

How to treat a septic tank

  1. Pump the tank down below the level where the roots are growing.
  2. If the roots are heavy, remove or break up as many as you can reach.
  3. Spray the roots with a little water to clean and wet them.
  4. Pour the premixed RootX into the tank, onto the roots where you can reach them.
  5. Spray in {about 5 gallons} of water to start the foaming action.
  6. Do not use water in the home for 4 to 6 hours, so RootX has time to work.

How to treat the line from the tank to the distribution box

Apply RootX through a cleanout near the tank. If there is no cleanout on that line, have one installed first: without it, the treatment cannot reach the line properly.

How to treat a drainfield

  1. Apply the premixed RootX through the distribution box, using the amount for your line length.
  2. Add {about 20 gallons} of water behind it for a 4lb jar.
  3. Do not use water in the home for 4 to 6 hours.

Do not put RootX in the septic tank to treat the drainfield. It has to go in through the distribution box.

An honest note on drainfields: drainfield lines are perforated pipe, so some of the foam escapes through the holes before it reaches every root. Results vary, and the manufacturer does not guarantee RootX in drainfield applications.

Using a bacteria or enzyme product as well

Do not use them at the same time. Add your bacteria or enzyme product at least 2 weeks before RootX. If you need RootX right away, wait 3 to 4 weeks after the treatment before adding the bacteria or enzyme product.

Is RootX safe for my septic system?

RootX uses the herbicide dichlobenil. It is non-caustic, non-fumigating and non-systemic, and it does not contain copper sulfate, diquat dibromide or metam sodium. RootX will not harm pipes, septic systems or plants above ground. It carries the signal word CAUTION, the lowest hazard level on pesticide labels, and is registered for use in Canada under the Pest Control Products Act {(PCP Reg. No. 26435, 26436 or 26437: confirm the number on the jar)}. Always follow the directions on the jar label.

How often should you treat?

Once a year. Roots keep growing, even slowly through winter, and the protective coating lasts up to 12 months. You can apply RootX any time of year; early summer is ideal. {If you order from RootX Canada, we email you a reminder when your next treatment is due.}

Common questions

Can I use RootX in a septic system?

Yes. RootX can be used in septic tanks, in the line to the distribution box and in drainfield lines. Use the amounts above and follow the directions on the jar label.

Do I need to pump the tank first?

For roots inside the tank, yes: pump it down below the level of the roots so RootX can reach them.

Can I treat my drainfield by pouring RootX into the tank?

No. Treat the drainfield through the distribution box. RootX added to the tank does not reach the drainfield.

Can I use half a jar?

No. Each jar is one complete treatment and cannot be divided.

How long does RootX keep?

About 2 years stored indoors, away from extreme heat, cold and humidity. If the product hardens, break it up and use it as directed.
